Body position during the hop is everything. You want to get it down before you ever think of throwing the bars. When your starting out, hop pretty high (higher than nescessary) and practice pushing the bars forward, and sticking your butt out. This will automatically put you legs in line with the seat and get your upper body over the bars. Pinch your knees together. Even if your nowhere near your seat, pinching your legs together will stop the bike from rocking side to side when you chuck. Biggest mistake is centering your weight to far back and just trying to jam your hands on.. getting over the bars is key.
'whopping' 2.5" rise? haha, only in the Northwest.
Yeah it's a bit excsessive for that bike.. But look at all the jump/slope riders overseas with amazing bike control that run 50mm plus bars. Actually you dont have to look that far, Mccaul and his bikes are a good example. It's all clearance over the toptube ehhh
